When the war is over, what do warriors do? The gundam pilots attempt to answer this question as a new age of peace ushers in. On all accounts, Ground Zero can be considered a doujinshi due to its lack of consistency and subjected humor. However, it tackles deeply into the characters' morale and philosophies regarding war, peace, and of course, the gundams. Like Battlefield of Pacifists and Blind Target, Ground Zero attempts to bridge the gap between the TV series and the OVA, but is not in any way related to the other two manga titles.

In the near-future on planet Earth, a world gone mad where never-ending war is a fact of life, Kirio is the coolest kid at school. Up in the sky, a giant robot is fighting a fleet of gunships, but the brilliant and distant Kirio is far from fazed - until the battling 'bot makes an unexpected landing in Kirio's front yard and rings the bell. In this newfound frustration, he sold him off to a robot circus. There 'Tobio' was given the new name Atom (Astro Boy). Later, he would be taken in by Professor Ochanomizu, who serves as his guardian. Human-robot conflict occurs over and over again, and is a major driving force. Atom never gets appreciation for his work in stopping plots and conspiracies on the international and even intergalactic scale solely because he is a robot. The authorities doubt him because he is a robot. And as a robot, he has difficulty fully connecting with not just the humans around him (like his school friends), but even his robot family.
